Education: Born in the historic 2nd Municipal District of Vienna, Robert began his ballet training at age eight under the tutelage of Hely Scholtze. At age fourteen, he began dancing as an Eleve at the Vienna Volksoper. For four consecutive years, Robert passed the rigorous Impartial Board of Examiners’ Ballet Syllabus exams.

Presenting Denver: Can you describe an aspect of your work and/or creative process?

Robert Sher-Machherndl: I create new work, explore new ideas, and keep this art form relevant to the current world we live in. To interpret and translate everyday life experiences into a new movement language—one that touches theater-goers and non-theater-goers alike, and attracts broader audiences across the globe.

PD: If you are originally from another state, what brought you to Colorado?

RSM: In 1996, the United States government recognized my accomplishments and awarded me “Alien of Extraordinary Ability” status, allowing permanent residence in the US.

PD: What do you hope your audience takes away from this piece?

RSM: I plan to deliver a powerful, impactful, thought-provoking, and transformative experience to each individual audience member.


PD: What is your greatest achievement so far in dance, and what is something you look forward to accomplishing at a later date?

RSM: Some of my greatest achievements include becoming a Principal Dancer with Bavarian State Ballet, Dutch National Ballet and Nederlands Dance Theater. Also, establishing Lemon Sponge Cake where I have had the opportunity to create over 35 choreographies in Colorado, leading to touring opportunities in the US and Europe.

PD: What is the #1 thing other people say about your work that you do not like? Why?

RSM: Distinctively contemporary, highly emotional and often moved to tears. I dislike when people ask before a performance “what’s the story”? But afterwards they completely understand.
