MCA Denver is thrilled to collaborate with Presenting Denver in their new exhibition, Movements Toward Freedom, on view at MCA Denver September 20, 2024 – February 2, 2025. The exhibition explores the power, possibility, and vulnerability of bodily movement in contemporary life.
Linking physical and social definitions of movement, Movements Toward Freedom examines how the articulation of our bodies, collectively and singularly, informs and shapes a vital society. Showcasing recent work and new commissions that span genres of performance, sculpture, video, painting and installation, the exhibition considers the ways that physical movement plays an integral role in exercising personal and collective agency, as a means for community-building, civic change and liberation, as well as serving as an antidote to strife and a vehicle for healing and care.

Presenting Denver invites HOLDTIGHT, an interdisciplinary performance art company founded by Gwendolyn Gussman, to perform on exhibiting artist Ronny Quevedo’s sculpture at the line, 2021, which reimagines a professional basketball floor in order to explore how group and individual dynamics are navigated on and off the court.
Time-based programming is core to the framework of the Movements Toward Freedom exhibition with many of the artists in the show expanding on their installations and sculptures through performances. Over half of the works on view will be activated during monthly programming by the artists, local dancers, and general public participatory events.
HOLDTIGHT performances will take place on Saturday, September 28, December 7 & December 8, 2024.
Presenting Denver represents the diversity and talent of the Denver dance community regardless of status and supports organizations that need to be heard and seen. We’re committed to connecting artists, and audiences and amplifying the voice of our dance community. To connect our community, we create dance festivals, networking, performance and sponsorship opportunities with creativity, diversity, and collaboration at the core.
HOLDTIGHT is an interdisciplinary performance art company based between Denver & New York City, creating and presenting experiential, interactive, and urgent contemporary works. Founded in 2016 and led by Gwendolyn Gussman, HOLDTIGHT illuminates the intersection of art, environmental activism, psyche, and body through the interconnected nature of various perspectives and identities. HOLDTIGHT’s mission is to create transformative experiences which elicit questions, conversations, interconnection, and deep joy, supporting humanity toward healing and radical forward-thinking change.
The piece up at MCA really is connected to the individual effort within the collective environment. Using the prompt of a free throw, like a penalty kick, or other instances with heightened elevation of the individual contribution to the final score, ‘at the line’ is about personal growth or sacrifice within the collective movement. How do we confront our own effort within and without the game to find ourselves? In this tense moment of self-reflection how do we pay tribute to our individuality? This moment exists for a brief moment and then is returned to the group dynamics of aiming to win.
