Presenting Denver: How did you select your music and dancer(s)?

Fernanda Oliviera: I knew I wanted to work with Ben Winegar (my partner in the work I am creating for the festival) in whatever my next choreographic project might be. He is a versatile, intelligent dancer who makes the creative process not only fruitful but very enjoyable. In addition to that, Ben is a talented musician. In fact, the music I am using in the piece was entirely composed, performed and recorded by him. Truly a choreographer’s dream!

PD: If you ever have free time, how do you spend it?

FO: I like to spend my (increasingly limited) free time reading, doing yoga, hiking or going to the movies.

PD: What do you hope your audience takes away from this piece?

FO: I hope every single person in the audience is able to experience Sylvia Plath’s poem through my movement, and understand it even without having read it. I hope it sparks a sense of empathy and, ultimately, I hope others feel the story I’m telling as their own, and relate to it in their own ways.

PD: What motivates you to get up and dance?

FO: Reminding myself that no one else can tell a story through movement the same way I can, and that even if my language reaches just one person and gives them something in that moment, it will all have been worth it.

PD: Besides physical locomotion, what is movement to you?

FO: Movement represents to me the ability to create a moment of magic and bring the audience into my world; it is a type of connection that can be interpreted differently by each person in the audience, but still joins them together in feeling the same emotion.

PD: Please list any upcoming events, programs, classes or shows that you would like Presenting Denver and our audiences to know about. Thank you!!

FO: See me on stage with Colorado Ballet this season and in my next choreographic adventures!
